In April and May, Holme Farm hosted a series of woodturning workshops for beginners, attracting 14 participants of all ages. These 3-hour sessions, led by the talented instructor Neil Cossey, provided a fantastic opportunity for individuals to explore the world of woodturning and learn the fundamentals of this fascinating craft.

The workshops took place in Holme Farm’s well-equipped wood workshop, featuring lathes and tools generously donated to support the learning experience. Participants were paired up, ensuring personalised attention and guidance throughout the session. Neil’s expertise and patient teaching style created a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone, regardless of their prior experience.

Safety was a top priority, and Neil began each session with a thorough introduction to lathe safety and operation. Participants learnt about the various tools used in woodturning and how to handle them correctly. With this solid foundation, they were ready to embark on their woodturning journey.

Under Neil’s guidance, participants learnt basic woodturning techniques and applied them to create their own unique pieces. Some chose to make a charming wooden mushroom, whilst others opted for a practical garden dibber or a delightful Christmas tree. The sense of accomplishment was palpable as each participant successfully transformed a block of wood into a beautiful and functional item to take home as a tangible reminder of their experience.

The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their enjoyment of the session and their eagerness to continue learning. One participant shared, “I enjoyed my induction to wood turning very much and am looking forward to doing another class in the near future.” Another remarked, “Great to learn from Neil. Very easy instructions and easy to learn from. I have more confidence to work with wood turning now. Many Thanks.”

The workshops not only provided participants with new skills but also fostered a sense of creativity and pride in their accomplishments. As one attendee put it, “I had a great time, very informative and lots of fun. Lovely to have something I made to take home that will look good on display.”

Building on the success of these beginner workshops, Holme Farm is excited to announce plans for future woodturning sessions. In addition to offering more beginner-level classes, they will also introduce intermediate-level workshops for those who wish to take their skills to the next level. These sessions will cover advanced techniques and provide participants with the opportunity to create more complex and intricate pieces.
