With sponsorship and step counters provided by Active Surrey, the three GP surgeries that constitute COCO Primary Care Network – Chertsey, Ottershaw and Crouch Oak – are walking to Venice with the help of Big Team Challenge. They are also raising money for three local community hubs, Addlestone Bowls, Gogmore Park Youth Club and Holme Farm.

By registering on the Big Team Challenge app, the participants have organised themselves into teams of five and are competing against each other; each day they log their steps whether it’s walking, running, swimming or cycling and they have selected the virtual route of London to Venice. They are due to “arrive” just after Easter.

“The competitive element of the challenge has got everyone buzzing,” commented Pippa Tucker-Brown, PR and Communications Manager for COCO. “We tend to exercise separately but every step counts so internal meetings have seen us all become a little bit more active; we are also planning to fit in team strides between clinical sessions.”

But the challenge isn’t just about being active but also about fundraising – supporting local groups is the priority as these are the groups that are vital resources for the social prescribers.

“Our social prescribers see members of the community that need an extra boost to their health and wellbeing. They are supported by the teams at Addlestone Bowls, Gogmore Park Youth Club and Holme Farm who provide free refreshments on the wellbeing walks that take place each month. These occasions have become true highlights for people and the social element is just as important as the activity. This is our chance to recognise and thank them.”

Please support the teams as they continue on their way to Venice!
